Senior industry leaders shared their insights

Global M&A deal volume has continued its meteoric rise throughout the pandemic to new frenzied highs with $513bn of transactions agreed in the first half of 2021, with US deal volume accounting for much of global deal making.

At the same time, an accelerated pandemic recovery in the US under Joe Biden is leading to inflationary fears, with several economists predicting a more hawkish monetary policy from the US Federal Reserve in the coming months. Fiscal policy is also on the agenda, as a new global corporate tax accord seeks to boost corporate contributions to the recovery.

The FT, in partnership with Datasite, provided a key forward looking market outlook for the US M&A market and explored the risks and opportunities that this new deal making environment poses.

    Key event takeaways

The M&A boom can't last forever and there are definitely headwinds on the horizon, namely President Biden's antitrust agenda and rising inflation .

Private equity has been a big driver of the M&A boom and, loaded with cash, is paying high premiums for companies. That's particularly the case in Europe.

The Spac market, another key contributor, is unlikely to reach the levels it did earlier this year but will continue to be a route to public markets for certain companies.
